Young Carers
Brief Description/Aims of the Group: A group of young people with caring responsibilties have established working relationship with Family Action -The Bridges Durham Young Carers Project. This project who have being commissioned by Durham County Council and County Durham and Darlington NHS Trust to dilver a service to young people with caring responsibilties.
Location of work: Various locations acrosss County Durham.
Meeting Times and Dates: Generally in Newton Aycliffe.
Work to Date: In July and August 2011 the group ran two training sessions for Safeguarding and Specilist services within Durham County Council- Children and Young People Services.
Some of the key messages members of the group wanted to get across during the training are highlighted below:
- Listening (taking the time to have a real converstion)
- Understanding (talk to the young person to try to really understand their point of view)
- Respect us
- We should be involved in all decisions made about our caring responsibilites both big and small (i.e. how things work best at home)
During November 2011 the group worked with the Childrens Rights Officer for Durham County Council exploring parental mental health issues and the effect this can have on children and young people.
The group have also now established links with Family Action - The Bridges Young Carers Project. This project has been commissioned by Durham County Council and County Durham and Darlington NHS Trust with the aim to deliver a service for children and young people with caring responsibilites.
Family Action will now support the group and the work they have done.
