Social Networking
Brief Description/Aims of the Group:
The Social Networking group was set up in February 2010 and continues to work towards its goal of a fully functioning, safe 'chat/online meeting' site for County Durham as well as the use of facebook.
Young people from across County Durham are still telling us the way they would most like to be involved, have their say and find out information, is via social media and the internet. Both on their PC's and laptops and on their mobile phones
From the start young people were telling us that they like to use social media, however with a lot of negative press surrounding social networking sites we needed to explore safe ways of using social media as well as useful ways for professionals working with young people to use social media as a way of engaging young with young people and getting them involved in meaningful participation....basically we needed to find out how we could use social media properly, with a purpose and stay safe!
The group had a representative, who along with a project worker from Investing in Children, went to Local Government Information Unit in London (LGIU) where they worked with people from councils across England to look at ways social media could be used in youth participation and how to make it safe. The learning from LGIU was then shared with a working group in Durham and from this the idea, concept and pilot site for Durham Have Your Say - 'HYS' began.
Young people from the group worked with professionals from various departments to develop e-safety information - the link below is for the parents e-saefty guide which was produced with the help and support of Durham County Council Communications team.

Work to Date:
We now have our own facebook page - please join us on facebook book by 'liking' our NEW Investing in Children facebook page. You will be able to join discussion, share your htoughts and ideas, contact the team and find out about current projects and up and coming meetings and events.... either search for us on facebook 'Investing in Children' and look for our logo or click on the facebook link at the bottom right of every page.
The 'Have Your Say' social networking site is now in the final pilot stages. Once a report has been sent to management at the County Council we will hopefully gain full approval for the site to go live and all young people across County Durham will be able to join and take part in meaningful participation and discussions.
As well as working on the site the group have worked on an information leaflet for children, young people and parents - promoting the site as well as giving vital internet safety information. This information will be widely available across the County once the 'have Your Say' site goes live.
Keep checking here for information about the site going live and how you can get involved, sign up and Have Your say!
