UNICEF Rights Respecting School Award (RRSA)

Brief Description/Aims of the Group:

The group offers support and training to children and Young People involved in schools working towards the Right Respecting School Award.

The group has been working together for two years and deliver peer led focus group sessions to pupils at local schools with the aim of other children and young people delivering them to other pupils within their schools.

The Rights Respecting Schools Award (RRSA) recognises achievement in putting the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) at the heart of a school’s planning, policies, practice and ethos. A rights-respecting school not only teaches about children’s rights but also models rights and respect in all its relationships: between teachers / adults and pupils, between adults and between pupils.

Over the past two years Investing in Children have been working in partnership with RRSA and Durham County Council. Young People involved in IiC have worked as Peer Educators to deliver Focus Group sessions to pupils within RRSA Schools.

With the overall aim being that the pupils would then go onto deliver their own focus group sessions in their schools and ensure that the views of pupils are listened to and acted upon.

Area of Work: County Wide

Meeting Times and Dates: The group meets at various times and dates depending on when they are required to run focus groups within local schools.

Work to Date:

To date the group have supported pupils through focus group sessions in numerous schools across the County. They have produced a DVD for schools to use highlighting the work of the group and the activities used by young people to deliver the sessions.

Young People involved in the project have also evaluated schools for Investing in Children Membership.

The group are currently working on a second DVD. The aim of the DVD is to raise awareness of Children and Young Peoples Rights. Why not check out some of the art work that will be featured in the DVD. More will follow.
