Respect

Brief Description/Aims of the Group:

This group exists within Investing in Children to allow some children and young people the opportunity to come together to discuss how they feel they are treated and respected by others.

This includes young people identifying various agendas important to them.  Investing In Children offers support so that young people can research and possibly make improvements to the way they are treated by others.

The group continues to meet with Investing In Children, Sherburn Neighhourhood Police Team and now Durham Youth For Christ in Sherburn. The main aim of the group continues to be about improving relationships with the police and young people.

Work to Date:Four members of the group (during October through to December 2011) worked with Investing In Children, Sherburn Neighbourhood Police Team and Durham Youth For Christ.

They developed a joint presentation that was delivered to Durham Constabulary’s Neighbourhood Community Inspector’s forum in October, about the joint working practice. (Please read the young persons article below about this meeting).

The presentation went really well and everyone was invited back in December to meet with the senior management team for Durham Constabulary.

The plan in 2012 is to continue discussions between the young people, Investing In Children and the police to possibly expand this practice into other areas of County Durham.

"On Tuesday 11th October me (in the white shirt) Jake , Jordan , Josh and Rob from Investing in Children went up to the Durham Police Headquarters and had a meeting with the bosses of the police. We talked about how we have built relationships with the police. For example playing football and have meetings with them at Sherburn Sports Centre.

We also talked about how the relationship is much better in the Sherburn area now. We also talked about how they used to speak to us on the streets when we were in  a big group and also told them there job would be much easier if they talked to us and have a bit crack on with us like they do now.

We plan to go back to talk to the big bosses and see if this could get done in other places so more young people get on with the police. "   Written By Callum Jones aged 15 Sherburn Village.
