Freedom Card
Brief Description/Aims of the Group:
The Freedom Card scheme is overseen by the Children's Rights Officer and the Listening to Children reference group. The Freedom Card is currently avalible to children and young people who are looked after by Durham County Council. The card entitles the holder to free entry into lesuire centres accross the county and various other cultural venues accross County Durham.
The aim of the scheme is to encourage and support looked after children and young people to access community lesuire, sports and cultural activities. Durham County Council foster carers and their own children can also apply for a card so that they can accompany children and young people to encourage them to access lesuire activities.
Work to Date:
The pilot scheme for extending the offer of the card ended in June and since then work to make this offer open to all families in need and families with children with disabilities has continued - we hope to have further news soon.
As part of the pilot, families who took part were asked to give feedbcak on the usefulness of the card, the impact it had on their family and the venues it enabled them to visit. Majority of the feedback was positive, however suggestions were made to extend the range of venues available and this is being looked at at present.
As a reward for taking part families were entered into a free prize draw - the winners were the Armstrong family who won a £20 Argos voucher.
