eXtreme Schools Groups

Brief Description/Aims of the Group:

Supported by mentors from the original eXtreme group the three sub-groups currently meeting are from Glendene School, King James School and the Sensory Support Unit. The groups give their opinions on plans, ideas and policies the County Council is developing as well as discuss the issues they feel are important to them.

It is planned that more groups will be developed throughout 2011/12.

Location of work:

Glendene School - Easington

King James School - Bishop Auckland

Sensory Support Group - The Sensory Support Unit based at Belmont School.

Meeting Times and Dates:

Schools groups meet at least once per half term, during school hours. The group who meet at the sensory support unit, meet after school. Their is a plan to meeting as whole group (all sub groups together) once per year.

Work to date:

The groups have all got off to a great start, they have already fed their ideas and opinions around leisure centres and facilities, home to school transport and the transition process from school to college and beyond and from childrens to adult services, to officers in County Hall and beyond.

Over the summer representatives from each of the subgroups meet to discuss issues such as the new Children and Young People's Plan for County Durham, new safeguarding procedures for children with disabilities and 'Thing's to do' for children and young people with disabilities - copies of reports from this work are available on request.

For the Autumn the groups are focusing on leisure, they hope to work alongside officers and servcies from the County Council to bring about positive change and make the ofer of leisure activities and facilities for children and young peole with disabilities greater and more varied.
