Community Development

Brief Description/Aims of the Group:  The aim of this group is to involve Children and Young People in community decision-making processes based on what is important to them in relation to living their lives in a safe and happy Environment. It is them about supporting children and young people with their ideas linking up to adults who can help.

Location of work:  Since March 2011 the main focus off the work has been with children and young people who live on Sherburn Road Estate.

Work to date:   Two agneda days took place in March and April and a focus group session also took place in at Lauren Avenue Priamry School. (Please see attached agenda day reports and focus group sessions at the bottom off teh page).

During the summer young people met to discuss their ideas and opinions further and have met with the various adults with the support of Investing In Children. A meeting was held in December with Durham Area Action Partnership, the police, local community groups, local Councillors and staff from Sports and Leisure Services.

The children and young people felt it was important to hold discussions with the various adults and work together and offer help. As a result of the meeting it is hoped that by working in partnership the following actions will happen and inevitably bring change to the area.

Action - The community project on the estate are going to put a joint bid in, based on the ideas they have discussed with IIC and at the event support by the AAP.

Action- The local Councillor will endeavour to support community projects if successful with funding bids.

Action –The Police are to work with IIC to establish meetings with y/p and police on the estate.

Action – The Police to hold regular meetings in the local primary school in 2012.

Action – IIC to establish meeting with younger children and Freemans Quay Sports Centre manager/ staff to discuss improving accessing to the centre. Offering possible support to the centre to go for Investing In Children membership.

Action – The community projects are now going to co-ordinate evening sessions better as the young people said they where open on the same nights which they thought did not make sense.

Action – The community project will discuss with the local community association in Gilesgate about how to get better access to a mini bus for Sherburn Road Estate.
