Community Buildings Research

Brief Description of Work:

Investing in Children were asked by Durham County Council’s Partnership and Community Engagement Team if they could organise some agenda days (Adult free events) for young people to consider and discuss their proposal to invest 2.15million pounds in council owned and managed community buildings and how this will be done.

Work to date:

Two Agenda Days took place, one at Bullion lane Community Centre in Chester-le-Street and another at Laurel Avenue Community Centre on Sherburn Road Estate near Durham City.

A brief summary:

In total 32 young people took part in the Agenda Days, 17 males and 15 females aged between 8-17 years.

All the children and young people had positive examples of what makes a good community building and ideas about what makes a bad one.

The young people highlighted ways in which investments should be made into Community buildings in the future and also give some examples why they would do it in this way.

Several children and young people explained that they would like to continue to be involved in further discussion about the funding and how it will be used. As well as been given more opportunities locally to influence Durham County Councils budget.

They also suggested methods and approaches that could be used to monitor how community centres and buildings use this funding in the future, which included their involvement

The single most important point made was that the best community buildings were fully inclusive and did not take away Children and Young Peoples Rights.
