Alder Hey Children's Hospital

Hi I am Cheryl Williams and I am an Investing in Children project worker based in Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool. I work alongside the Patient Experience Project team to support children, young people and staff to achieve Investing in Children membership for departments and services across the hospital Trust.

An example of this would be the recent Investing in Children membership awarded to the Renal Dialysis Team and Ward D2. I helped to support the young people to meet with staff to talk about what it is like for children and young people when they come into the hospital for their dialysis treatment. Patients awaiting renal transplant are required to visit Alder Hey three times per week and remain seated in a chair or bed for up to four hours while receiving treatment. The young people said they did not look forward to the weekend as they knew they would have to return to the hospital on a Monday for the start of their weekly treatment. This was combined with the fact they felt that there was a lack of activities to keep them occupied when they were receiving their renal dialysis. The hospital Arts for Health department was then approached to support the young people and this led to the music therapist providing music sessions for the young people. A partnership was also forged with the local youth club who offered the use of their recording studio to the young people. The project resulted in the young people recording their own improvised “chill out” cd, which they hope will benefit other patients across the hospital. The young people are also now working on an animation project with a local multi -media company.

Investing in Children membership should be awarded to the Renal Dialysis Team and Ward D2 as things had changed from talking to staff. I thought that there wasn’t much to do when I was on dialysis. They have now got more things to do. I think this had happened because we had talked to members of staff. They did listen to what had been said and things had changed.”
